Southwire’s Project GIFT® Provides Disaster Relief in Louisiana Following Hurricane Ida

In response to the devastation of Hurricane Ida, which hit the state of Louisiana in late August, Southwire’s Project GIFT donated $10,000 toward disaster relief efforts and hosted an internal contribution campaign. In just five days, Southwire employees donated an additional $6,850 to the cause, bringing the total donation to nearly $17,000. 

The disaster relief drive focused on providing a tractor trailer full of water, non-perishable food items and cleaning buckets to Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans, an affiliate of Feeding America® and United Way. 

Ana Moresi, food sourcing specialist, says that Southwire’s donation helped the organization feed more than 34,000 people across Louisiana communities. 

“Receiving a donation from Southwire has been a blessing,” said Moresi. “We gathered 16,375 pounds and were able to use this donation to help our neighbors in New Orleans and St. Tammy parishes after the tragedy of Hurricane Ida. On behalf of Second Harvest, I would like to say, ‘Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.’”

Southwire partnered with Industrial Products, a New Orleans supplier of worksite products, to facilitate the donation. 

“We were able to drive our relationships with a key Sphere 1 member in industrial supply to make the connection with Second Harvest, enabling us to provide the New Orleans market with much-needed support during this time,” said Steve White, vice president of sales for Southwire’s tools, components and assembled solutions (TCAS) business. 

Blair Watkins, Project GIFT coordinator, is grateful that Southwire was able to make a difference in the community by giving back, pointing out that Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on the same calendar date, August 29, as Hurricane Katrina — the event that sparked the creation of Project GIFT in 2005. 

“Although we could not physically assist our neighbors in New Orleans as we did when Katrina made landfall, we are so thankful for the ability to send a truckload of items with the help of C.M. Tanner Grocery and Kits for Kidz to the community during this difficult time,” said Watkins. “The local community in and around New Orleans will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.”
