Between July and December of 2020, Southwire Canada donated three truckloads worth of product to Habitat for Humanity Canada. These products included extension cords, outdoor lighting, timers and more. Due to the large amount donated, Southwire will be recognized as a Bronze Level Donor through Dec. 31, 2023.

"At Southwire, one of our core values is giving back to the communities where we live and work to improve the quality of life,” said Tim King, Southwire’s president in Canada. "It is an essential part of how we do business. We are happy to be a partner with Habitat for Humanity, which does a tremendous job of bringing communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership."

According to its website, Habitat for Humanity was originally founded in Georgia, but became an international organization in 1976. Habitat for Humanity Canada first began in the 1980s and has grown into the organization it is today by maintaining a goal of providing a solid foundation for thousands of families to lead better, healthier lives in Canada and around the world.

The products Southwire donated will help Habitat for Humanity Canada with this goal, as the company will be able to use the donated Southwire product as part of its ReStore program. Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers operated by local Habitats that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories and building materials. The proceeds from these stores are cycled back into local Habitat for Humanity homebuilding projects. By donating to the National ReStore program, Southwire is part of worldwide movement dedicated to ensuring everyone has a decent place to live.

“Habitat for Humanity is grateful to Southwire for its generous donation in 2020,” said Julia Deans, President and CEO, Habitat for Humanity Canada. “Southwire showed support during a time when many families faced additional hardship brought on by the pandemic. The truckloads of products donated made their way to our local ReStores to support homebuilding projects in communities across Canada and our partnership will go a long way in making a real difference to help families living in low income build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.”

Donating to the ReStore program is an effective way to move discontinued or excess stock, deal with gently used returns and show Southwire’s commitment to the environment and its communities. Alexander Couckuyt, director of operations at Southwire’s Canada facility, said that this giving back opportunity is important for the organization because it is a sustainable way to make a difference in the communities in which we live and work.

“We are honored to partner with an organization like Habitat for Humanity who is making a difference - one house, one family and one volunteer at a time,” said Couckuyt. “I am grateful to be a part of Southwire as it supports giving back to the community, that has given us so much.”
